How to find your dream bridal makeup look

Whether you’re choosing to hire a professional makeup artist for your wedding, or you’re doing your own makeup, one thing is sure- You need to choose your makeup look ahead of time. You can rock whatever look you want (it’s your day after all!), but if you’re not sure where to start, check out my top tips on choosing your perfect bridal makeup.

Match your wedding makeup to the style of occasion

When you’re planning your bridal makeup look, think about your day’s overall theme and try to summarise it in three words. For example, if you would describe your wedding as tranquil, relaxed beach vibes, it’s best to not opt for overly formal makeup. Instead, you’ll want subtle breezy, natural-looking makeup to match the setting. On the other hand, if you’re having a formal black-tie evening wedding, you’ll want to stay away from a casual makeup look and think about a more classic evening look that reflects your overall wedding theme.

Get inspired by your favourite celebrities and influencers

Start researching your favourite celebs and influencers to find styles you not only love, but you think would look good on you on your wedding day. You can even find inspiration in the social media profiles or portfolios of your favourite makeup artists (you can check out mine HERE!) Start pulling together your favourite looks that will suit your venue, style, and personality. Creating a mood board or Pinterest board that you can fill with bridal look inspiration is a great idea. You might start seeing recurring themes or trends that you like, and which you can show to your makeup artist.

Bonus note - When searching through images, try to look for girls with similar hair and eye colour to you.

Take your wedding dress or outfit into consideration

Try to find some inspiration from your wedding day attire. That way, there’s a theme to the entire look. For example, a glamorous ball gown may pair well with a striking red lip, whereas a lacy garden-party style dress may better suit a more barely-there makeup look.

Check the weather forecast

It may sound silly, but the weather can have an impact on your wedding day look. For example, if you’re getting married in the summer, or a warmer climate, light makeup and waterproof products are the way to go. If you're exchanging vows on a cold wintery day, you might want to use moisture-rich products that hydrate the skin to keep your rocking that bridal glow all day long.

Enhance your own beauty rather than going with a current fad or trend

Try to focus on highlighting your best features and enhancing your natural beauty, rather than sticking rigidly to current trends or fads. Frosted blue eyeshadow and heavy-handed blusher were all the rage in the 80s, but looking back it’s hard to see why! Makeup trends like these can come and go but choosing a classic look that enhances your natural beauty and compliment your best features never goes out of style (and won’t have you hiding your wedding album in years to come!).

Prioritise your makeup preferences

Is there one element that you would like to see in your wedding makeup? Maybe a bright coloured lipstick, or a smokey eye? If this is a priority for you, let your bridal makeup artist know, and they can suggest complementary makeup to bring this vision to life for you.

Mistakes to avoid when choosing your bridal makeup look

While you’re choosing the perfect makeup look for your wedding day, there are a few things you’ll want to avoid.

  1. Skipping your wedding makeup trial

By having a makeup trial, you can create a look that suits you perfectly, and that you’re comfortable with in advance, rather than trying to create something new on the morning of your wedding. During a trial, you will have the chance to play around with different features, colours, and ideas until you find the perfect look. If you have questions about my makeup trials, you can find out more here.

2. Assuming someone else’s bridal makeup look will be the same on you

Have you ever brought a picture of a celebrity's haircut to your hairdresser only to realise it looks totally different on you? The same goes for your wedding makeup look. When you’re researching your perfect makeup look, bear in mind that your features, skin tone, bone structure, and skin condition will all play a part in your overall look. What looks great on one person, may not look great on another. That’s why a makeup trial is so important. It will allow you to test different looks and decide on which one seems best for you.

3. Not prioritising your skincare routine

Great-looking makeup starts with a great base. So don’t forget to keep up (or start) a skincare routine that that addresses your specific skincare needs and helps to create that beautiful bridal glow on your big day. Don’t forget to drink your daily 2 litres of water either - keep that body/skin hydrated!
